Experience an IBHS Hail Field Deployment
NOAA’s National Weather Service Storm Prediction Center Annual Severe Weather Report Summary reported 6,962 hail events in 2023 compared to 4,436 in 2022. Texas, and Nebraska had the largest number of hail events according to NOAA in 2023.
According to a March 2023 analysis by State Farm, the company paid out over $3.5 billion in hail claims in 2022, an increase of more than $1 billion from 2021 due to increased hail claims and inflation. State Farm’s top states for hail claims were Minnesota, Texas, Arkansas, Illinois and Nebraska.
IBHS deploys the only U.S. active field research team dedicated to study hailstorms to help improve detection, forecasting, and modeling capabilities of hail. The program goals are to:
- Provide data to guide and improve laboratory hail testing.
- Map hailswaths to help verify and improve radar-based hail detection.
- Determine the environmental conditions that influence hail strength, hailstone concentrations, and ultimately the impact to homes & businesses.
- Evaluate regional differences in hailstone and hailstorm characteristics.
- Preserve record setting hailstones for future research with 3D scanning technology.

I am confused that they claimed the "asphalt shingle Class A roof is the best type of roof in a wildfire prone area." It is actually slate, followed by metal roofing.

They mean the Category of construction = Class A. Other materials forms of construction would also be rated as Class A. Eg. Metal, Concrete, Slate

I live in LA County and am working on updating much of my landscaping to succulents, cactus, and gravel/pebbles. Unfortunately so many of the low water use landscaping plant options are also a high fire risk (particularly those with oils).

Interesting to see the ‘research program’ lens that the participants primarily use to look at hail. Keep up the good work. Definitely a ‘growing’ field. More warming leads to more and bigger thunderstorms leads to more and bigger hail leads to more damage (and now injuries and deaths). The question is just how bad can it get and how quickly. And let’s not forget increasing rainfall, more exotic wind events (plus firestorms!) and lightning damage.

  • @brianrichey7269

🤣🤣🤣 The house isn’t even nailed to the floor! Should say Fortified house verses house with no nails! The 4x4’s aren’t even attached to the floor. They must have used better nails on the vinyl on the second house. Sheathing doesn’t even wrap the corners, it’s also broken at the top of the walls. But they Must have used fortified vinyl windows! The walls blew out but glass didn’t. I’ve framed houses all of my life and been through many tornado rebuilds. Blew one house away and didn’t even blow the vinyl siding off? Is this Satyr? It blew a concrete block wall down to the outside, but didn’t blow the glass out? Where’d all that pressure come from. The roof usually goes first. Not the first floor walls. I agree with Simpson strapping. But this is almost insulting to people who know the proper way to frame a house.
